Rudie van Meurs (1939)

Began his journalistic career in 1962 on the provincial daily newspaper 'Nieuwe Provinciale Groninger Courant', then joined the national newspaper Trouw as reporter and sub-editor,covering news and current affairs in Holland and a wide range of events in Europe, Iran and de USA. Worked for three years as head of the news-desk.

Joined Vrij Nederland, a leading Dutch weekly news paper, in 1974 until 1994 as editor News & Current Affairs and Features Editor. Foreign assignments have included Hongkong, Taiwan, Cuba, the Caribbean,Vietnam and Eastern Europe as well as special investigations in Western Europe, with particular reference to Spain and Britain. For domestic stories he specialises in investigative journalism on business, law, health and the Delta Project in the south-west of The Netherlands - the continuous story of water control and ecosystem management of large coastal basins.

Became a part-time radio reporter in 1988 and produced a number of news and current affairs programmes and documentaries for the Humanistisch Omroep Stichting(HOS). His radio-play 'De Ramp' (The Flood - 1993), forty years after a disastrous flood killed 2000 people in the south-west of the Netherlands, has been awarded three times - 'De Zilveren Reiss microfoon' and 'De J.B. Broekszprijs' in Holland, in Japan he received 'The Morishige Award' for 'the best script'.

Also the author of seven books, including a book on'The BVD' (the Dutch secret service), a book on Cuba, two books about fraude and corruption in the Netherlands and two children's books - one awarded with the 'Vlag en Wimpel'. His book 'Hoog Water'(High Water Tide - 1996) strongly criticized the decision of the water boards to evacuate 200.000 people of the river area during a high water period early 1995.

Since 1992 free-lance (investigative)radio reporter with the public broadcasting association VPRO. In 1997 he joined the VPRO sundaynewsnight tv-programm 'Lopende Zaken' as senior-editor. Made a number of tv-documentaries, such as about the peace-process in Guatemala.

Worked as consultant and chief-lecturer with the foundation 'Doen', Press Now, OSCE, UNDP and the European Union, on training programmes for journalists and professors in journalism in Almaty (Kazachstan), Sarajewo (Bosnia), Albania, Kosovo, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moscow, Bakoe (Azerbeijan) and a number of other cities in the Russian Federation. Worked on behalf of BBC/ Radio Netherlands as lecturer for journalists in the Middle-East.

From 1989 till 2002 he was part-time lecturer on journalism at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Has been a staff-teacher since 2005 at the 'Kosova Institute of Journalism and Communication in Pristina.

In February 2004 his - three times awarded - radio-play 'De Ramp' (1993) was broadcasted as 'The Flood' on BBC four.
